The Canterbury Tales: The Pilgrims



The pilgrims that are depicted by Chaucer, in The Canterbury Tales, represent a wide spectrum of society during the late-medieval time period. Chaucer brings his characters to life by using two different methods. In the case of the Squire, Chaucer himself describes the Squire's physical appearance and personality in an effective manner bringing the character to life. But on the other hand, in the case of the Wife of Bath, he gives a brief physical description and then lets the Wife of Bath paint the picture of herself. In both methods Chaucer was able to get the reader to understand what was truly at the heart of these characters and make the characters real and believable.
