While Fortunato is drunk, he gives Montresor a sign that he doesn’t understand. The sign is that of a mason. As a sign to prove to Fortunato that he is a mason, Montresor shows his trowel. The trowel is another symbol of foreshadowing because it is a tool used in the killing of Fortunato. When they reach the end of the tunnel, there is recess in the wall. Montresor tells Fortunato that the pipe of Amontillado is in the depths of the recess. Montresor pushes Fortunato into the wall at the end of the recess and chains him to the wall.
