In Edgar Allen Poe famous story "The Cast Amontillado" demonstrates excellent example of Poe's literary theory about the importance of the single effect. According to Poe, a good short story achieved its unity by achieving a single emotional effect on the reader. In this 1846 story, the theory was put in the literary work extremely well. in the story; there is no blood and no guts or gore, it's all in the psychology. "The Cask" presents a bizarre psychological study of two men. It was the little details like the "nitre" that kept the single effect. You can find irony in every line of the story. Montresor's reply is even more ironic, "Yes, let us be gone." He's torturing Fortunato with his irony, and has been all along. Come to think of it, he's been torturing us with irony, too. We never know if he means if he means what he says.
During the carnival season, Montresor encounters Fortunato and decides to implement his plan carefully not to arouse Fortunato's suspicions through irony. Poe's story describes the inner workings of a murderer's mind, Montresor. Poe uses different types of irony in the conversations between Montresor and Fortunato.
