'Our Town' has a subtly simple storyline, which is ordinary to the point of deception. It is the extreme simplicity of the story which makes the audience take notice of the play and this is when we come to realize that what this play is all about. The play has a small character list but these characters are extremely powerful because of the messages they portray. It is true that Wilder has not used these simple folks as mere persons with a life to live, but they have been used as forces that help the author in a clear presentation of life cycle and related issues. that the play is highly thought provoking but we must remember that it is the characters that take the play forward and not exactly the plot itself. A woman goes through various stages of life and it is only after her death that she realizes how she had underestimated the true worth of this life. In few beautiful lines, Emily reminds us how blessed we really are: "Good-by, Good-by, world. Good-by, Grover's Corners... Mama and Papa. Good-by to clocks ticking ... and Mama's sunflowers.
