The Continental Army At Valley Forge

The Valley Force camp made the men’s mind tremble with thoughts like; should I stay or leave? The Continental army under the command of General George Washington built a camp named Valley forge to survive the harsh winter of 1777-1778. The camp was 18 miles outside of Philadelphia and was a perfect location to keep watch on the British. The camp consisted of few fieldstone houses, Mill for forging iron, and huts for the soldiers to live in. I would have stayed at the camp and help the continental army because there are still hopes of us winning, the continental army needs more soldiers, and I am a patriot seeking for freedom me and the future land.

survive the winter and end the British rule. According to the report of Noel F.Busch, “ Death Estimates Due to Illness During Encampment: December-June 1800-2500” (Doc. A). Diseases such as smallpox have been researched and fewer people are dying from Illness. The gap caused by the Illness needed to be filled.

Smallpox killed lots of soldiers in the camp until it was researched and Immunizations were made to protect soldiers from it. The continental army needed men to fill the spot of the dead soldiers for a higher chance of victory. According to Thomas Paine, “THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country” (Doc. D). Many people went off duty for the rest of their lives after their nine-month duty period was over. The loyal ones stayed in and helped General George Washington with the war.
