Often, parents want their children’s lives to be better; this is the human nature of most parents. Feld, for instance, in the “The First Seven Years” by Bernard Malamud, worries much about trying to get his daughter, Miriam, supported & taken care of. Not only does he care so deeply for Miriam, but also the story speaks so clearly of his effort to guide Sobel out of his misery, that Sobel may return, as the much needed employee for Feld. Here, Feld is not only caring for his daughter, but he anxious for them to go out, in that he wants Miriam to have the best possible life. In doing so, he narrow-mindedly thinks none of Sobel, who is ready and willing to try a relationship with Miriam. Well, Max agrees, and Malamud begins to describe their date, shortly thereafter. Paraphrased, he states that (through the eyes and mouth of Miriam) they (meaning Max and Miriam) went on a walk together, and that was basically it.
