The liver is the largest organ of the body and weighs about three
to four pounds. The lower ribs protect the liver that is on the right
side of the abdomen. The liver is an important organ like all the others
of course. Without it our bodies could not function at all. Our bodies
would then be poisoned and unfit for us to do any kind of activity. We
would not have the energy to do anything at all.
The liver is the body's energy factory. Most of the sugar you eat
is turned into chemicals that can be used by the body cells. These
chemicals known as glucose or dextrose is part of the bodies main source of
energy that is glycogen. Glycogen is produced by the liver. It is ...

the cells. As a filter the liver absorbs harmful chemicals and even some
poisons and breaking them down into less harmful materials. The liver then
allows the substance to pass out of the body.
The substance left after the blood cells have been broken down, any
unusable nutrients have been broken down, and chemicals that are to be
passed are ready these substances are combined and made into bile. Bile is
the common substance that the liver produces to aid in the digestion of
fatty foods. Bile is what gives stool its brown color.
The liver also collects and stores' nutrients for the body. The
liver changes these nutrients into simple amino acids. These acids are
needed for growing hair, skin, and nails, and also in breaking down excess
or dead cells.
The liver is an unusual organ because nearly every one of its cells
is exactly alike. The liver has an ability to restore any lost or removed
part of it, and in a matter of weeks.
