The Glass Menagerie: Internal War



Tom faces many conflicts on his way to fulfilling his desires for life. He lives with his mother and sister in a dimly lit apartment, which is surrounded by alleys in the flats of St. Louis. His life is a humble one working at the shoe warehouse while taking care of his mother and sister. But, inside he is starting to boil because he wants more out of life. Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie shows this internal power struggle that Tom is going through. Tom’s uncontrollable desire to see the world led to his walking out and leaving everyone behind.

Amanda is the one that tries to control Tom and burden him with all the responsibilities. She is constantly nagging him about what he does and how he does it. She tells him to “eat food leisurely, son, and really enjoy it” (1.8-9) when he eats his dinner. She confiscates books by Mr. Lawrence from his room because she “won’t allow such filth brought into [her] house” (3.16). Tom’s smoking habit gives Amanda one more reason to gripe at Tom while he is at home. The expectation of Tom is to work and pay the bills without the help of his mother and sister.
