What are work songs? A work song is a piece of music closely connected to a form of work, either sung while conducting a task or a song linked to a task which might be connected narrative, description, or protest song. The work song of my choice is, “Wade in the Water.” This song originated from slave workers and carried on for generations after slavery. Even after slavery ended, this song was carried on from generation to generations, and was sung by people in prison or labor. I chose this song because it has a powerful meaning behind it and it symbolizes freedom.

because she lead slaves to freedom. In the song, it says, “ If you don’t believe I’ve been redeemed, follow me down to Jordan’s stream.” To slaves, the Jordan stream would be a code name for the Ohio River. If the slaves could get across the Ohio River, they would be free.

This song has a biblical background story. The story told in this song is a story about Moses and how he leads the Israelites out of Egypt. The Israelites were slaves of Egypt. Moses leads about 600,000 people through the Red Sea. “Who are those children all dressed in Red?.. Must be the ones that Moses lead,” is an example of the story about Moses and the Israelites.

“Wade in the Water” was used to keep the slaves’ spirits high. That song gave hope to them and helped them to the freedom they desired. This song is still sung throughout the world. It signifies empowerment and ...
