The Importance of Setting

In any play, the major characters face certain problems that will or will not be resolved during the course of the story. Many factors influence this ultimate fate, among the most important of which is the setting of the story. The setting, more than anything else, sets the tone of the play, as it establishes a frame of reference within which each of the characters must act. Time and place influence ways of thinking and behaving just as they would in real life. the world in which he lives. Obedience to his wife's desires brings him into conflict with the entire feudal order of the Scottish kingdom. He kills his liege lord the king and usurps the throne. The rightful heir is put aside, and Macbeth becomes someone outside the system, compelled to use brute force to retain his grip on power. Furthermore, the very religiousness of the medieval world makes of his decision a moral choice as well as a social one. The fact that Macbeth ultimately carries out the fate decreed by the Three Weird Sisters shows him to be a figure of evil. In the medieval mind, only a person in league with the forces of darkness could commit such heinous acts. To rebel against one's king is the ultimate act of treachery. It is also the ultimate act of inhumanity, much as Lady Macbeth declares that she would kill her own suckling babe were it to keep her from power.
