The Lady with the Dog

In “The Lady with the Dog,” Anton Chekhov explores the theme that love can transform even the most ordinary people and lives into something unique and extraordinary. The character of Dmitri Gurov demonstrates this theme at first when he discovers in his relationship with Anna Sergeevna something new and unexpected. Later in the story, Gurov begins to change his attitude about women when he realizes that he loves Anna and respects her. Finally, Anna and Gurov recognize that their love, rather than give them happiness, ends up making them miserable (Chekhov).

time has become an emotional experience that is deep. Connolly says that Gurov realizes that Anna has become the center of his life. He also states that the two spent all of their time together, indulging in the sensual pleasures of the city and the joys of their new relationship. Finally, Connolly declares that Gurov’s enduring hope and Anna’s optimism reflects their love for each other (Connolly).
Next, one of the most impressive aspects is Gurov’s gradual metamorphosis: subtle details of action and dialogue illustrate a profound revision of his rather cynical and egocentric attitude toward relationships with women. He no longer thinks of women as “childlike and a waste of time.” He never thought he would have such feelings for a woman but he recognizes that Anna is not an ordinary woman. He sees that their relationship has changed him for the better (Chekhov).
