The Last Song

The Last Song was written by the well-known author, Nicholas Sparks. The genre of the novel is fiction, but it can also be considered a romance for young adults. The setting of this book is in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where the main character, Veronica Miller's father lives. In the beginning of the novel, Veronica Miller (also known as Ronnie) is a rebellious seventeen year old girl from New York who dresses in a lot of black, and has a purple streak in her hair. Other main characters include Steve Miller, Jonah Miller, and Will Blakelee.

When the kids arrive at their father's house, Jonah is more than excited to see Steve. He is introduced to a stained glass window that Steve has been recreating for the church after the first had been burnt down. Ronnie is furious that she has to be stuck with her father for the summer, when she'd much rather be with her friends back in New York. She makes Steve put walls around his piano, so she doesn't have to hear him play. Steve decided not to play at home anymore though, and played at the church, where he begins to write a composition.
When Ronnie arrives in town, she explores the town's annual carnival where she collides with Will Blakelee, who is diving for a volleyball, which spills Ronnie's soda all over her. As she is shopping for a new shirt she meets a gothic girl named Blaze, who befriends her and introduces her to her boyfriend Marcus, and his friends, Lance and Teddy.
