The Life Of Author Harper Lee


Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, to parents Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. Lee is the youngest of four children. She grew up in a small town in Alabama called Monroeville. When Lee was a child she was a tomboy and read a lot. Lee and her childhood friend Truman Capote, who provided the basis of the character Dill in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, enjoyed many of the same adventures that took place in the novel. In fact, many of the characters in Lee’s novel were based upon many people in her own life. Lee’s father, a southern lawyer, was a big influence on her novel. Lee first attended college at Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama from 1944-45. In 1945 Lee decided to pursue her law degree at the University of Alabama. She stayed at the University of Alabama until 1949. She also studied for a year at Oxford University in England. Lee never completed her work for her law degree. In the 1950’s she worked as a reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and BOAC in New York City. In the late 1950’s Lee decided to devote all her time to writing. She lived in a cold-water flat, and was supported by friends who believed in her writing.
Lee began writing at a very young age. She never tried to get her works published until she met a literary agent in New York. The literary agent told Lee that she should expand one of her short stories into a novel. That short story would later become Lee’s famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
