These issues are explored through the eyes of a young Anglo Saxon American girl who struggles to understand the racist attitudes white Americans have towards 'Negros' in the 1930's. concepts. The words 'nigger' and 'darkie' are often used in a hateful and offensive way to coloured members in the town of Maycomb. The character of Bob Ewell uses foul and obscene language such as "I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella". (17.190). This form of language is used by Bob Ewell towards Tom Robinson whenever possible, only conveying his lack of education, his uncivil attitude and his poor social status in the town of Maycomb. Likewise, the protagonist Tom Robinson uses colloquial dialogue such as 'suh' for sir and 'chillun' for children. Tom uses this form of communication well manneredly, never repeating the foul and insulting words Bob Ewell had said toward him.
