Racism and Prejudice in “To Kill A Mockingbird”

Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, raises strong ideas concerning racism and prejudice. At the time in history in which this novel was set, racism was acceptable in society, therefore making it one of the key ideas was rational. It is mainly shown as white people being against black people, or those affiliated with black people like Atticus being mocked for defending a Negro. Pejorative language is used towards them by white people including “nigger” and “coloured folk” as the Negroes were considered to be lower than them. For example, it was obvious that Bob Ewell was the one that violated his daughter Mayella, not Tom Robinson, because of the evidence that is shown. However Maycomb County happily overlook the evidence supporting Tom Robinson, purely based on the colour of his skin.

Arthur (Boo) Radley is arguably the principal case of prejudice in the novel, as well as being an example of symbolism. Boo has been represented as a harmful, frightening and beast-like creature amongst the people of Maycomb County. Because of the opinions people had on him, he becomes an excuse for anything bad or unexpected that happens in the novel. Boo becomes a figure for superstition. As a result, he is segregated and rejected from the community, in a similar way to the Negroes who live in Maycomb County.
