“‘Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand, it’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through till the end’” (Lee 149). This quote alone can explain how during the whole novel there is a constant battle between good and evil, and how in life you just have to “see it through till the end”. The theme of good and evil in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird can be shown through Atticus’s kindness, the evil that is thrown at Tom Robinson, and the innocence of the mockingbird.

anyone, and this contributes to his good character. Finally, another example of Atticus’s goodness can be shown here: “‘You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat’” (Lee 101). Here, Atticus contributes to the “good” in the book by setting more positive examples. Although Atticus does makes up a good portion of the “good” in this book, there are some bad and/or evil examples present as well.
Some of the evil and injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird comes from the trial of Tom Robinson. The racism and unfairness of Tom’s trial really points out the negativity in this book. “‘The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments’” (Lee 295).
