his town and family and trying to prove he was a man. Dave, like Wright, lived in the south where people spoke with heavy southern accents, “Just two dollahs? Shucks, Ah could buy that when Ah git mah pay. . . Yuh know bettah t keep suppah waitin” (Wright 172), and farming was the primary way of living, “Even though it was not yet daylight he started for Jim Hawkins’ plantation” (Wright 176). “Blacks” got paid very little to work long hours in the fields, and, to make things worse, Dave’s pay didn’t even touch his fingertips. His mother didn’t think he was responsible enough to hold his own money only being 17 and all. “Your ma lettin you have your own money now? . . . Shucks. Mistah Joe, Ahm gittin t be a man like anybody else” (Wright 171)!
One day, his mother finally did allow Dave to have some of his hard earned money. Dave convinced his mother that he would be responsible with his earnings and only purchase a gun which he would bring straight home to his father. Well, ...
