The Monkey’s Paw and The Necklace Comparative Essay.

‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by WW Jacob and ‘The Necklace’ by Guy de Maupassant are two short stories which are related by the clearly theme of fate shown in both novels. However, the authors’ views on fate differ. In ‘The Necklace’ Madam Loisel’s actions cause her own downfall whereas in ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ supernatural forces are at work. Also, both protagonists are quite discontent with their present standard of lives. However, the degree of their discontentment varies. However, on the other hand, for Jacobs the workings of fate are due to supernatural causes. In the words of the Sergeant- Major, the monkey’s paw is ‘Just a bit of what you might call magic’. The fakr who put a spell on it ‘wanted to show that fate ruled peoples lives and those who interfered with it would suffer consequences. It is clearly shown that fate is not governed by humans and if it is tried to be changed then it could result in serious consequences.
