The Mountain Of Death


Imagine, a mountain that has taken the lives of two people and has hardly ever been climbed. This was the mountain that was climbed in the summer of 1998 by my father, my best friend and me. It is called, Sawtooth Ridge, creeping to an elevation just under 10,000 feet, eighty-nine switch-backs, and a distance just under two miles. You would think that this hike would not be much, right? Well, you are wrong. This mountain is the most challenging hike in the Trinity Alps region. It taught me fear, joy, adrenaline, and the most realistic dread of heights ever imagined. That summer it became known to me why they called it Sawtooth Ridge by experiencing it first hand.

It looked like a little green dot painted into the valley floor by an artist and his brush. I did not realize how hard it would be until the middle of the mountain.
Through the middle of the mountain each step was a challenge. I could feel the rocks slip out from under me and the hot sun beating on the shoulders. My mouth tasted of salt from the sweat and each drip come off and down my neck. When looking down, I could see the ledge before me and the rocks slipping out from underneath. It was the most fearful feeling ever. One could watch as the rocks would disappear beneath them and fall to the floor below, at a distance of about a half of a mile.
