Of all the buildings on the Acropolis, the Parthenon represents the true architectural style most associated with Classical Greece. Its architects were Ictinos and Callicrates, and the sculptural ornaments were produced under the direction of Phidias, one of the greatest sculptors of all time. In essence, the Parthenon was intended to be more than a product of engineering logic, for it was to be viewed and appreciated as a great work of art containing elasticity, resilience and the life of a human figure in stone. The various friezes that adorn the Parthenon are unique in the ancient world for their careful creation of the impression of the passage of time. This effect is achieved by the use of a sequence of figures posed to reflect true motion while at the same time symbolizing the humanistic beliefs of the ancient Greeks. In the part of the frieze that decorated the western side of the cella, youths are lacing their sandals and holding or mounting their horses; in the friezes of the two long sides of the cella, the procession moves in parallel lines-spirited youths, chariots, elders, jar carriers and animals for sacrifice. Seen throughout the procession is balance, the "ideal" and the "real" that is so characteristic of Greek perfection.
