I would bow my head humiliated by the smiles and snickers of the American children around me l I grew insecure about Spanish." Julia had to conform into the English language and American culture. She had changed into an American and she will no longer become humiliated. She changed for the better within herself. She says later, "I was no longer a foreigner with no ground to stand on.
