Introduction

The early Renaissance church was instrumental in the creation of music. It is interesting to examine three musical elements and how the church affected their use.

Due to the "domination of the early Christian Church during this period, sacred music was the most prevalent. Beginning with the Gregorian Chant, church music slowly developed into a polyphonic music called organum performed at Notre Dame in Paris (www.oconnormusic.org/styles.htm)." Polyphonic music is a metaphor for music and dialogue of speech, and comprises "three interrelated elements: the autonomy of the integral voice and the conceptual maintenance of the autonomy; the means of combining, and, paradoxically, constituting voices in a state of simultaneity (Benson)." Secular music "flourished until the period culminated with the sacred and secular compositions of the first true genius of Western music (www.oconnormusic.org/styles.htm)."
