People have been smoking tobacco for quite a long time. Some people say smoking goes back to 500 AD. It was brought to Europe by explorers of the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century a machine was made to manufacture cigarettes. This then spread smoking across America. By 1945 it became common for women to smoke. But from the mid 1970’s smoking began to decline in many Western countries. Across the world one third if adults puff their way through five trillion cigarettes a year. Studies show that teenage smoking is on the increase despite government efforts to bring it down. Most smokers began as teenagers.

There are many companies against smoking these companies aim to educate people about the dangers of smoking and also force governments to restrict the tobacco industry in areas such as advertising. The United States government has recently become more involved in trying to stop smoking. The FDA has threatened to ban cigarettes if the agency is not allowed to control tobacco.

Many people ask if smokers should have a right to smoke? A ban would be difficult to control and enforce. Smokers and non-smokers are caught in the chaos about our freedom to smoke. Some people believe non-smoking bans have gone too far.

But there are many risks of smoking. Nationwide 70.2% of teenagers have tried cigarettes smoking. Tobacco use is responsibly for nearly one in five deaths in the United ...
