Dictatorship lasted 6 months or however long an emergency lasted (whichever time was shorter was chosen) and censorship lasted 18 months. All other positions were termed to one year. All members were of equal rank and could veto the actions that other magistrates would place. Normally, the number of people in a certain position increased over time. The people of Rome compromised of the plebians and were represented through tribunes and assemblies, similar to the Athenian government.
The Senate had three main duties: to act as an advisory board to the magistrates, to control and oversee the treasury and for public relations such as repairing roads and dealing with crime.
