The poem "The second coming" by William Butler Yeats uses literary devices to control the intensity as well as the mood of the poem as it progresses. As the action of the poem increases, the tone becomes more intense and solemn. The change in tone is accompanied by the literary devices strung thru the poem such as metaphor. The metaphors of the poem are written in such a way that they can be interpreted differently, this goes with the tone because it can change the tone of the poem as you interpret the metaphors differently. the author follows it up by talking about the world's greatest people losing their conviction. This changed the tone to very serious. The author did this to put an image in the reader's head and try to make the reader feel fearful of what is happening with this world. The metaphors in the poem can in fact change the interpretation and meaning of the poem to the reader.

The second important literary device utilized by the author is imagery. Imagery is observed in the poem when the author writes "Twenty centuries of stony sleep were vexed to nightmares by a rocking cradle." (stanza 3 line 2) The quote uses great and tedious detail to explain how something so simple as sleeping in a rocking chair can cause disasters within. As well as creating an image, the quote also changed the tone from exciting to serious and disturbing by explaining how the innerworkings of a country or human can end up being its worst fear.
