For thousands of years before the Europeans arrived in Southeastern North America, about 400,000 of the ancestors of built towns and villages across the area. After 1510, when Spaniards began to explore and settle in their territory, disease killed many of , separated many of the towns, and caused many tribes to break up.
Over the past centuries, they faced enormous pressures to change to give up their own view of the world and the systems they had developed to substitute systems of belief and actions that, did not always work for them as well.

By 1813, some of the tribes rose up against white settlers and against other tribes that supported white settlement. The Second Seminole War (1835-1842) was the longest and the last of the US’s Wars of Indian Removal fought. It was fought at the east of the Mississippi River. It was the first guerilla style war fought by the US Troops. After the US withdrew from the fighting in 1842, an uneasy peace lasted for fourteen years.
Their descendants remained isolated in the Everglades until the late 1800s, when white traders, Christian missionaries, and the US government agents began to enter their territory again.
