The Storm

Chopin uses “the storm” as a symbol of the characters lives. Each of the character’s individual lives is in turmoil in its own way. Calixa was in a rut with her current life, consumed with being a wife and a mother; staying home raising a baby while Bobinot was settled in his ways too, seemingly stressed by her demands of being a housewife “prepared for the worst- the meeting with a over-scrupulous housewife.” Alicee was still I doubt of his current relationship, he was willing to have his wife stay away if it meant she would be happy. wait out the storm. Alicee’s wife Clarisse was out of town in Biloxi. All the pieces of the puzzle were in place to make the perfect “storm.” The storm came quickly and out of the blue similar to Alicee being out by Calixa’s house at the exact time the storm came. The right place at the right time.
“The storm passed and everyone was happy.” They all needed the storm to be happy in their “normal lives”. Babinot will be happier because Calixa is happier; as will Alicee because Clarisse is. Calixa and Alicee are happier because of each other.

She was too young, shy and reserved to be together intimately beyond kissing then; this seemed to be the perfect time for them to finish unfinished business.
