In, “The Things They Carried”, each character held with them something of importance. Jimmy Cross carried several important tools intended for use in the war, but the things he carried that meant the most to him because of their intangible importance were the letters from Martha, pictures of Martha, and the pebble Martha gave to him. reminders of the life he left at home and the woman, Martha, who he loved. Cross exchanged letters with his love at home and carried the letters he received from her with him, “…folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack” (O’Brien 1). Cross loved Martha so much that he would even taste the seals of the envelopes, “…knowing her tongue had been there” (1). Jimmy was so madly in love with Martha, but always doubted that Martha truly loved him. He continually felt that the letters she sent to him were not love letters but simply chatty letters. These letters were a constant reminder of Martha, but also what Cross had left back at home, his love. The letters were there for Jimmy to always remember his love back home, but as a result they created a dilemma for Cross. Jimmy Cross was at war with all his emotions at home and thus had a crisis in where his mind was. He was never fully dedicated to fighting the war, as he continually thought about Martha.
