The clock strikes midnight of the Year 2000 and suddenly the lights go out with chaos erupts throughout the country. Stores are being looted, riots are breaking out, and more seriously massive destruction occurs nearly destroying the Earth. Problems of this type are usually easily fixed, however the computer systems that crash or stop working may be erased of all memory. In other words, a whole system of customer information such as payments that are due or received may be lost.
Not only are the water utilities' computer systems at risk, but also the embedded chips may be affected. Embedded chips are electronic devices that are mostly in automated systems. Some of these embedded chips are time controlled devices that, much like computers, will fail after the clock strikes midnight. Such devices control the flow of water into different areas. Embedded chip failure ...

could lead to malfunction of the software programs on mainframe computers, servers, and communication systems. Of greater concern, although, are the embedded chips.
Somewhat like the water, embedded chips are used extensively in all parts of the electric power industry including generating plants, transmission lines, distribution systems, and power control systems. Only a small number of these embedded chips will have Y2K problems, making it impossible to ...
