The Vesus The Heart In The Sca


The Head verses the Heart in The Scarlet Letter.
There are many conflicts in The Scarlet Letter,
but the most predominant is the conflict between the
law and the will of the heart. While we have to live,
and abide, by the law we must also consider the
emotions of our heart. It is often these emotions
which guide, if not dictate, our everyday decisions.
When these choices take us on a path that is contrary
to the law, conflict inevitably arises. Removing
emotions from the decision making process, allowing us
to logically and obediently follow the dictates of the
law, is something that we humans, as mortals, are often
incapable of.

widow most likely wants to get on with her life, but
the widow can not have any type of relationship with
anyone until seven years after the incident. This
would be a constant reminder of the loss of a loved one
to the point where they would go insane. There are
some who could not bear this law and went against it.
A good example of this is the relationship between
Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester Prynne's
husband was lost at sea and thought to be dead. After
two years of mourning Hester could bear the pain no
longer and entered into an affair with Arthur
Dimmesdale. From their relationship came a child,who
was the news bearer to all of the law they had broken
and the sin they had committed.
These laws also influenced society. After Hester
Prynne had stood on the scaffold and put on the Scarlet
Letter, people would have nothing to with her. Though
many had committed the same crime, Hester was shunned
all the more ...
