The Yellow Wallpaper

“The color is repellent, almost revolting…a sickly sulphur tint….” The yellow wallpaper in Charlotte Gilman’s story symbolizes the composition of the society in which the narrator lives: her marriage/family life, her physical health and the treatment of (or lack thereof) her condition, and the role that the narrator has assumed in life.

I find it interesting that Gilman uses the color yellow in such a symbolic manner. The story was written just five years after one of the worst Yellow Fever outbreaks in US history. Yellow Fever derived its name from the jaundice that affects some individuals inflicted with the illness and the transmission of the disease is primary via mosquitoes. ...

Once again I draw comparisons here to a male dominated society with educational and professional opportunities that are endless, vast if you will. Then I consider Gilman’s confinement within that society – and relate it to the narrator’s confinement in the converted attic nursery.

When we first learn about the wallpaper from the narrator, she describes it as “dull…pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study…lame, uncertain curves…destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions”. I envision the narrator’s self-description when I read this paragraph. Her use of the words “lame and uncertain” lead me to believe that she has very little self-worth and an inferiority issue as it relates to her role as a woman in society and in her marriage.

In terms of her marriage, the narrator seems to view herself as a burden rather than a partner to her husband when she speaks of “constant irritation and provoking study” in describing the yellow wallpaper. Perhaps the ...
