The short story -- A clean, Well-lighted Place -- is written by Ernest Hemingway, one of the most famous American author in 20[th] century. There are three men at different ages who get involved in the story: the old man who seeks a clean and well-lighted place, the older waiter who provides such a place, and the younger waiter who can't understand them. As the older waiter puts it, "nada be thy name thy Kingdom nada thy will be nada in nada as it is in nada", this story tries presenting us the world of nothing.

in the lonely shadow rather than other empty and totally lighted places. "...everyone had left the cafe except an old man sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light", "...the tables were all empty except where the old man sat in the shadow of the leaves of the tree that moved slightly in the wind." Obviously, his heart has become an isolated island, which cannot be lighted by the well-lighted surroundings. Thus, everything that could lighten one's life means nothing because of the deep-rooted loneliness.
