Themes of Ender’s Game

The themes in Ender’s Game are “Children vs. Adults”, “Games vs. Reality”, “Winning all the Battles”, and “Living in a Shadow”. “Children vs. Adults” is the main theme. Most of the book follows on the track of the manipulative teachers taking advantage of Ender’s (somewhat) innocence and ability to wipe out the buggers, a thing Ender never wanted to do. Each chapter begins with the teachers talking about Ender and their plans for them. In the novel, adults are portrayed as untrustworthy and manipulative, shown most when they tricked Ender into destroying the bugger home world.

Another theme is “Games vs. Reality”. At the battle school, the game seems as it is reality for most children. Only Dink seems to not care, and then Ender, after his fight with Bonzo. At Command School, what seemed like a game to Ender and his peers was all real. The fantasy game is fake, although giving Ender mental anxiety by finding a picture of Peter. Later, the game enters reality when Ender finds that the buggers made scenes from the game on their world.
A minor theme is “Winning all the Battles”. When Ender fights, he doesn’t just want to win, he wants to win. Ender wants to win all the battles in one. He fights hard and ruthlessly to make sure that there are no more battles. This also happens in the Bugger Invasions.
