William Shakespeare was a very influential and creative playwright. Shakespeare had only certain actors that he could use when making his plays so he would write his plays to coincide with the actors the he had. While he was writing his plays he would often enough have characters in one play relate to the same type of character in another play. For example, in the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the character named Theseus has the same characteristics as the character Prince Don Pedro in the play Much Ado About Nothing. Prince of Aragon, which is why he has so much power and why Hero believed him. She thought that since he was the ruler, he knew all. Theseus is the ruler of Athens and also uses his power to manipulate events. In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermia’s father picked a husband for her to marry. Hermia’s father wanted her to marry a man named Demetrius. The problem with that is Hermia is in love with another man named Lysander and refused to marry Demetrius. Her father told her that the law said she had to marry whom he wanted or she would be put to death. Theseus felt compassion for Hermia so he overruled her punishment. Her only options were that she could either marry Demetrius or she would have to become a nun and be with no man for the rest of her life. Though it was not the most generous choices, it was a choice nonetheless. Both of these examples were ones that the characters used their power to help someone out.
