The assertion , “Those who betray Hamlet also betray themselves “ is valid to a greater considering that in the play “Hamlet , Prince of Denmark” by Shakespear there are characters, who happen to betray the protagonist , Hamlet and it also happens to be the path that leads them to delude themselves . The characters who delude Hamlet are Ophelia, King Claudius , Queen Getrude , Laertes , Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

When the play begins we learn that , Queen Getrude gets married to King Claudius within a month after her late husband , King Hamlet had passed away. Hamlet is not fond of the idea that his mother , Queen Getrude failed to mourn longer with him for his father hence Hamlet felt that Queen Getrude had betrayed him. This also advocates that Queen Getrude was also betraying herself as the play is set on the Elizabethan Era , Queen Getrude could have married King Claudius not because of love but as a way to be respected by the society and remain the Queen of Denmark and with this , she had been untruthful to herself.
