The waitresses/waiters of America are trying to live off of minimum wages with the help of tips of other Americans. Waitresses and waiters make $2.13, in most states, an hour because the employer knows that the waitress/waiter can make up the rest of money by the tips they make. The reason why tipping is a big controversy is because the waitress/waiter is trying to make a living off the tips and it has shaped America to tip for everything they do.
