Uncle Jack was a very typical father who wanted to keep Francis away from the evil in the world, but Atticus was the opposite. In the book, Scout asked Atticus what rape is and Atticus gave her a definition. He exposed his children to the real world so they could understand life. Furthermore, Atticus set his children up for adulthood. For example, Atticus forced Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose for a month. During these times, Jem and Scout learned about Mrs. Dubose’s addiction and her true courage. Atticus did not shun his children from reality, he guided them through racism and social inequality toward who they should really be.
