and never had a nice thing to say about either of them. Mrs. Dubose would make snide comments to them because she assumed that they were trouble and were always up to no good. She would point out Scout’s unlady-like appearance with, “What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady! You’ll grow up waiting on tables if somebody doesn’t change your ways . . . ” (101). Jem and Scout never liked Mrs. Dubose, but with Atticus’ prompting they could deal with her. However, she made one comment that went too far. Because of Mrs. Dubose’s racist ways, she said to Jem and Scout, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawying for niggers!” (101). Jem heard the comment and stiffened up while Mrs. Dubose continued, “Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (102). wasn’t just an old, grouchy lady but someone who had a great deal of problems in their lifetime. They learned from this experience that they had the wrong idea about her and they were able to change their views. It takes growth and maturity to be able to see where someone else is coming from. After Jem and Scout realized that Atticus really looked up to Mrs. Dubose, they have a completely new outlook on their father, and they see his bravery and how he fights battles he knows he probably will not win.
