To Kill A Mockingbird: Prejudice



What is prejudice? Does it occur in your life or in your surroundings? Prejudice is defined in Harper Lee's novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, as something by which people don't respect others for the color of their skin and for who they are. We see in the story that prejudice is a derived key fact amongst the people of Maycomb. Atticus, who is one of the main characters in the story, is portrayed as being a person who teaches values, good parenting skills, and has great respect for others.
Atticus mainly teaches Jem and Scout values. The main values that Atticus teaches his children is about bravery. His view on bravery is:

Another brave thing that Atticus proved to his children was when the old rabid dog, Tim Johnson, was wandering up the street towards Jem and Scout. Atticus who's nicknamed " One Shot Finch", Atticus shot old Tim with one shot and the children could not believe their eyes. Just like Jem's and Scout's ability to change their views about Mrs. Dubose through maturity, they were also able to do the same with their respect for their father, Atticus.
As a person who teaches values, Atticus also was effective in his parenting skills. The first example that shows Atticus's parenting skills is when he allows Scout to wear overalls despite Aunt Alexandra's suggestions to encourage her to wear dresses to become more "lady like".
