To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee presents how one person's emotions and inevitable circumstances affects the interactions that happen between different people. The book is set in the Deep South of America in the 1930's, Atticus, a lawyer and a father attempts to educate his children (Jem and Scout) on how to accept and understand people. Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, a black man, falsely accused of rape, and the children take a particular interest in the case. In time, the trial will teach them very important lessons about the value and eminence of a human life. Jem stepped into his shoes, and saw the situation from Walter's point of view. He saw that Walter only wanted a friend, and that reaching out to him was the right thing to do. By inviting Walter for dinner, Jem became the bigger person, and understood what it meant to `step into someone else's shoes.'
If the people of Maycomb would have been able to step into Tom's shoes, they might have understood why he dared to feel pity for a white girl. During Tom's trial, Jem grew confident that Tom would be a free man. When the jury ruled Tom guilty, Jem took it extremely hard, not understanding why anyone would have an innocent man killed, when the true identity of the culprit was so obvious.
