To Kill a Mockingbird is a well-written novel that teaches many lessons. Many of these lessons are taught to Jem and Scout by their father, Atticus. One of those lessons is “If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. But to understand means to be able to step into his or her shoes and see things from their point of view. Atticus tries to explain that the single trick to get along with all kinds of people is by understanding them.

Throughout the novel this lesson is in action. An example is during the trial Scout steps into Mayellas shoes. Mayella is thought of as a white trash but when Scout steps in her shoes she sees that Mayella is actually a lonely, unloved young girl. She just wants company and to be wanted. Another example of this lesson in action in the novel is when Jem makes a snowman as a replica of Mr. Avery. Jem is very proud with his art piece and this shows that Jem is pleased with the snowman but it also shows that he is looking at the snowman from the perspective of himself. But when Atticus sees the snowman he says "You can't go around making caricatures of neighbors" but Jem disagrees with Atticus that the snowman is a caricature. Then Atticus states "Mr. Avery ...
