In music, a tone is distinguished from noise by its definite pitch, caused by the regularity of the vibrations that produce it. Any tone possesses the attributes of pitch, intensity, and quality. Pitch is determined by the frequency of the vibration, measured by cycles per second. Intensity, or loudness, is determined by the amplitude, measured in decibels. Quality is determined by the overtones (subsidiary tones), the distinctive timbre of any instrument being the result of the number and relative prominence of the over tones it produces. The term whole tone or whole step refers to the interval of a major second, as in moving from one white key to the adjoining white key on the piano. ...

For example compare the tones in the instrumental pieces Canyon and Beethoven's 5th symphony. In Canyon, the tone throughout the piece is upbeat and high-strung, very forceful in intensity. Beethoven's symphony number 5 on the other hand is totally the opposite, in which the tone is characterized to be mellow and soft. These contrasting tones serve to identify with the listener. The composers aim to make a piece of music at a certain tone, which will be pleasant to the listener, and sometimes to convey a message. For example in "All Cried Out" by Allure and 112, the instrumental song serves to instill an image of being so distraught that your all cried out through a soft, yet pleasurable tone which compels the listener to sympathize.
