From the time she hears Torvald's self-righteous and hypocritical diatribe about Krogstad in Act II of Ibsen's play A Doll's House, Nora realizes that her husband of eight years is not the man he purports to be. When Torvald reveals the true reason behind his willful firing of Krogstad, Nora sees that he is "narrow-minded." By the end of the play, Nora's feelings of disillusionment intensify. She fully understands that for the past eight years she had been living "with a strange man," one who never truly loved her but rather, simply cherished her as a possession. When he reads the second letter in which Krogstad agrees to keep the illegal debt silent, Torvald admits that "all that concerns us is to save the remains, the fragments, the appearance." His values are woefully superficial; Torvald cares more about the way the world perceives their marriage than with their actual relationship and cares more about his reputation than genuine morality. Torvald's general attitude toward women also becomes clear to Nora. He belittles her and likens her to a child, stating that she exhibits "womanly helplessness." Whereas in the past Nora might have gone along with Torvald's attitude toward women, by the third act, she states, "You have never loved me.
