Garvey and an elderly Tlingit man, Edwin, had escorted Cole to the remote Alaskan island, gave him the procedures and left him alone. Edwin had built Cole a shelter for him and every 1-2 weeks he came and brought supplies for Cole to survive on his own. One day Cole was so angry that he had burned down the shelter and all his supplies, he then made a plan to escape the island, his plan had failed and he was left lying cold and even angrier than before. That night he saw the Spirit Bear for the first time. It was a large white bear very beautiful and mysterious. It defied Cole and he hated it.
