that scared the French colony of Saint Domigue starting in 1791. Soon, Toussaint became a well known slave revolt leader.

On October 30, 1791, just after Toussaint became a free man, slaves started a massive revolt against the whites in the French colony of Saint Domigue. Toussaint was 33 years old when this revolt began. He believed that God wanted slavery to be abolished and had called him to lead Haiti out of enslavement. Toussaint chose to act as the doctor of the black army instead of joining them in their massacre of the whites. He also helped his master and his family escape before the situation got worst. The revolt was eventually put to an end. The slaves were defeated and were put back to work.

Toussaint remained in the French portion of the island, even though most of the other black leaders of the revolt fled to the Spanish side of Haiti and were given high ranking posts. Toussaint experienced as a general and helped improve Haiti economical and racially. He ...
