minds. Take the line "after fire in the streets, disemboweling of our city" (ii. 3) for example. The speaker was lamenting the ruin of his land in the hands of the colonizers, painting an image of a city reduced to ashes, a trail of devastation in their wake. One could feel the resentment emitted in the speaker's words, resentment towards the colonizers themselves, as well as the resentment to the fact that they, the locals, will eventually put the very same people that have tormented them on a pedestal to praise and worship, as they, "in time, see their bleached beaked faces as beautiful" (ii. 9). Though the imagery serves to highlight the speaker's resentment, there is also a note of despair and resignation, an inevitable emotion as the speaker loses all hope for freedom. The bleak way in which the colonizers have made them "long to be under grey skies of an absent world" (ii. 8 ) all the more exhibits their hatred that has eventually turned into despair.
