away. Northrup not only withstood the horrors of slavery, but managed to press on in order to see his family again. How does one continue on? When you are separated from your family on purpose, the name you go by is changed; you are valued as property and only the physical features you offer. They beat you down, they demoralize you, keep you ignorant of language and news, all so that you work without distraction. How was it that Solomon managed to carry on and maintain his sense of self worth?
From the very beginning of his experience as a slave until he returns home, Northrup convinces his reader that he isn't a "common slave". He's smart, an extremely talented fiddle player and most importantly he knows the taste of freedom and wants nothing more than to taste it again. One of the most painful secrets he had to keep from those around him was that he was indeed, free, because this would only lead to more suffering as his white masters took insult.
