Two Views On The Confederate Flag’s Controversial Issue

The Confederate Battle Flag has been the object of significant controversy during the past several years. Proponents of the flag argue that it has its place in history and should be held in high esteem to honor those who bravely fought for the Southern cause. Others view the flag as a symbol of oppression and hatred. They believe it should be abandoned, outlawed and removed from public buildings. Both sides seemingly have valid arguments and concerns. The Confederate Battle Flag has an important place in American History, and should be treated with the respect that is due other icons of importance to our past.

Neither army could, at a distance, distinguish the Red, White and Blue of the Union's Stars and Stripes from the Confederacy's Stars and Bars (which had been patterned after the flag of the original thirteen American Colonies). All these similarities, and the need to establish some unique identity, ultimately gave birth to what is known today as the Confederate Battle Flag.
The Battle Flag was patterned after the cross of Saint Andrew, an apostle of Christ who was bound, rather than nailed, to the "X" shaped cross to prolong his suffering. The design of the battle flag was intended to provide a uniquely identifiable banner that would not be mistaken in battle.
