Ulysses S. Grant’s Leadership And Simplicity



Ulysses S. Grant was one of the Union’s best generals, if not the best. He displayed two strong qualities, leadership skills and simplicity. “He could not only discipline others, but he could discipline himself,” said Horace Porter, who was in service with Grant. Grant’s methods were always simple, direct, and to the point, which established his simple nature (Fuller, 72-73).
In May of 1861, Grant was appointed by the Governor of Illinois to command a disorderly volunteer regiment. He exhibited amazing leadership skills and by September of 1861 he had risen to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers. a besieged army. Within a month Grant had turned the tables and had defeated the enemy forces. Grant was much more than just an incredible battlefield commander. He produced the foundation of the modern American army. Grant emphasized a strategy of maximum firepower with maximum mobility (Perret, 28).
Simplicity was the basis of Grant’s nature. He saw the war in its simplest form, which meant that he saw it as a whole. He did not see the difficulties in winning until they surfaced. His strategy was simple, he was going to hold Lee in Virginia and move Sherman through Georgia to attack him in rear. “His theory of war was simplicity itself; he says: ‘The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike at him as hard as you can and as often as you can, and keep moving on’”(Fuller, 78). ...
