In the beginning of the book he talked about how his parents had good jobs back in Santo Domingo but once they moved here everything turned for the worst. His father couldn't deal with how bad they were doing financially and ended up leaving Dan-El, his younger brother, and his mother. Once they were on their own they ended up becoming homeless. A lot of undocumented immigrants end up becoming homeless just like he did. This is because they don't have their papers so they can't apply to get actual jobs that'll bring in money so they can afford food and shelter. Another similarity he has with the others is the strive for a better life.
