Throughout his life Dan-El Padilla faces many obstacles with sticking to one identity. He's conflicted so many times because of his different surroundings. Many times, the people around him aren't accepting and it's hard for him to fit in because he's in two completely different places. It's basically like two completely different lifestyles in a way. In the beginning of the book he talked about how his parents had good jobs back in Santo Domingo but once they moved here everything turned for the worst. His father couldn't deal with how bad they were doing financially and ended up leaving Dan-El, his younger brother, and his mother. Once they were on their own they ended up becoming homeless. A lot of undocumented immigrants end up becoming homeless just like he did. This is because they don't have their papers so they can't apply to get actual jobs that'll bring in money so they can afford food and shelter. Another similarity he has with the others is the strive for a better life. His parents came here to have a better life because it was much safer here compared to where they lived and also the education system here was way better than what they had at home.
